As we discussed in the workshop, music can have a direct effect on minimizing anxiety and our response to stress. Everyone has a different preference of what kind of music they find soothing, be it fast and motivational, or slow and calm. For my project, I wanted to write songs that fit two of the topics we discussed in class: depression and happiness. For my first song (“Trapped”), I geared it towards people who do not like to listen to sad music when they are in a bad mood, by writing a very upbeat song with major chords. However, I decided to juxtapose this tune with sad lyrics fit to a more negative song, contrary to many upbeat songs I have heard. I made a list of many negative feelings and what causes them, and then incorporated them into my lyrics. For my second song (“Attitude From Connection”), I chose to do the opposite, writing a slow sad song with happy lyrics, to target the other end of the spectrum of emotions. This second song’s lyrics came from the happiness I felt after being on phone calls with my friends who are scattered across the country in different schools.
