In my piece, I illustrate a fusion of pop and movie culture of the 70s through an anti-art digital collage of icons and soundtracks that exemplify the time period. Each image represents a relevant movie, cultural movement, celebrity, location, or leisure activity that was commonplace in the 1970s. The Spotify codes littered around the piece lead to iconic movie tracks from the decade, featuring theme songs covering many genres such as instrumentals from Jaws or disco from Saturday Night Fever. The purpose of the collage is to relieve stress or anxiety over one's current life by indulging in the nostalgia of the 70s- either through its pop culture or its lineup of blockbuster movies. The inclusion of anti-art overlaying the collage incorporates the feeling that the nostalgia is a disillusion; this can be a good thing, however, as we can come to understand that there have been struggles throughout time and we are not alone in struggling in the climate we live in today, although it is different. The use of Spotify codes tied to the latter is meant to further immerse the viewer into the 70s with sound through nostalgic but timeless movie tracks, utilizing both the senses of hearing and seeing to transport them back to arguably simpler times.
